Employment

• A Muslim employee at a cable company requested time off to attend Friday congregational prayer services (Jummah). The employee was fired shortly thereafter. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the complaint and advising the man of his legal options.

• A Muslim cab driver reported experiencing harassment by security at O’Hare airport. According to the Muslim man, airport security has prevented him from being able to pick up customers. The man reported this to his cab company, but the cab company responded by prohibiting the man from going to O’Hare to pick up customers for two weeks. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the complaint and will take whatever measures necessary to resolve the issue.

General

• A Muslim woman has been harassed by her homeowners association. The woman’s family is the only Muslim family in the association. The woman says that she has received letters from the homeowners association demanding that she stop operating her licensed daycare, even though other homeowners in the association operate small businesses out of their home. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the matter and will take whatever measures necessary to resolve the issue.

Government

• A Muslim man was driving his cab and turning left onto another street when a bike messenger struck his mirror. After arguing with the bike messenger, the bike messenger attacked him. Police arrived on the scene but did not speak to the Muslim man, and instead issued a ticket to the Muslim man even though he was badly hurt and required medical attention. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the matter and will take whatever means necessary to resolve the situation.

• A Muslim man applied for citizenship but was delayed being given an interview due to the background checks. Recently, the man was scheduled for an interview. CAIR-Chicago will prepare the man for the interview for citizenship.

• A Muslim man contacted CAIR-Chicago regarding a delay in obtaining citizenship. The man applied for citizenship in October of 2007, completed all the necessary requirements, but has not been scheduled for the interview and exam. CAIR-Chicago is incorporating this case into its Citizenship Delay Project.

• A Muslim man was being issued a parking ticket by a police officer when he noticed that the screen on the officer’s computer read “Member of a Terrorist Organization” after the officer put in his license plate number. CAIR-Chicago is advising the man of what steps he should take to address the designation.

Prison

• A Muslim inmate complained of being denied religious accommodations. He also complained that the prison’s chaplain treats Muslims differently and disparately from other inmates. CAIR-Chicago is advising the inmate to go through the grievance procedure available at the prison and will monitor the issue to ensure that the inmate’s religious beliefs are accommodated.

• Two Muslim inmates at the same prison have complained that they are being discriminated against by prison administrators. CAIR-Chicago is advising the inmates of the necessity to file grievances for all complaints.

School

• A 12-year-old boy at an elementary school was targeted by his teacher, who referred to him as a terrorist in a hypothetical situation. The hypothetical situation made no point of educational value and was wholly unrelated to the topic being taught: ancient Mesopotamia. CAIR-Chicago represented the family at a mediation session with the Chicago Public Schools. CAIR-Chicago will continue representing the family until a positive resolution is attained.

• A Muslim boy was wrongly accused of stealing by his school teacher. The teacher later denied accusing the boy of stealing. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the issue to determine whether discrimination is involved and will seek out an apology from the school regarding the incident.
