Feature 326 Career Hatemonger Steven Emerson Enraged by CAIR-Chicago’s Positive Social Engagement
CAIR-Chicago Anti-Hate Center|
May.05.09

Notorious Islamophobe Steven Emerson is at it again, now attacking CAIR-Chicago’s Civil Rights Director, Christina Abraham for her human rights work with the U.S. State Department. Emerson's smear campaigns consistently target mainstream American Muslim organizations.

A self-anointed "terrorism expert" whose rhetoric is characterized by charged terminology and a dislike for open debate, Emerson harbors a longstanding track record of anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bigotry, and has lost credibility with respectable newsrooms.

    Government

    • Three Muslims contacted CAIR-Chicago regarding delays in obtaining citizenship. The individuals applied for citizenship and completed all the necessary requirements. CAIR-Chicago is incorporating these cases into its Citizenship Delay Project.

    • A Muslim woman was treated unprofessionally by government officials working at the airport. The woman felt she was targeted and singled out for wearing hijab and was therefore subject to rude service and unfair treatment which was very embarrassing in a public setting. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the matter and will take whatever action deemed necessary.

    Employment Discrimination

    • A Muslim woman who had consistently received great evaluations began experiencing mistreatment and mediocre evaluations by a new supervisor. Her new supervisor commented on her English skills, telling her that she needed classes (her English is proficient). Recently, the woman received disciplinary action for failing to show up for work due to illness, even though she reported her absence. The protocol outlined in the employee handbook for issuing disciplinary action was not followed. The woman’s supervisor is trying to prevent the woman from using her sick days towards those days. CAIR-Chicago has advised the woman on what options are available to her and will take whatever action deemed necessary to resolve the issue.

    • After suffering sexual harassment by a co-worker and her supervisor, a Muslim woman was moved from one position to another temporarily until an opening was available for a different desired position. However, other individuals were hired for the position she was waiting for. Additionally, another co-worker referred to her as a “shoe bomber” and accused her of planning to burn down the building. After reporting this issue to human resources, the individual who made the comment was fired. Subsequently however, the woman was then given all of the job duties of the fired employee, in addition to her own, without proper compensation. The woman was later informed that her position was being eliminated. CAIR-Chicago has advised the woman of her options and will take whatever action deemed necessary to resolve the issue.

    • A Muslim man working at a family owned business is experiencing harassment in the work place. Being the only employee who isn’t a member of the family, he is targeted with inappropriate, discriminatory comments and forced to take on a larger workload than others. To create a fair and safe work environment, CAIR-Chicago is assisting the man in addressing his issues with his employer.

    • A Muslim man is being denied accommodation to regularly attend Friday congregational prayer services (Jumah) by his employer. CAIR-Chicago has advised the man of his rights regarding the matter.

    Prison

    • A Muslim detainee in an immigration detention facility contacted CAIR-Chicago because he was denied his right to the Qur’an and regular access to cleansing for prayer. CAIR-Chicago is attempting to connect the man with a local attorney.
