Government

• Ten Muslims contacted CAIR-Chicago regarding delays in obtaining citizenship. The individuals applied for citizenship, completed all the necessary requirements, but their applications have not been adjudicated. CAIR-Chicago is incorporating these cases into its Citizenship Delay Project.

• Three Muslims reported experiencing delays in obtaining their green card for permanent residency. CAIR-Chicago is following up with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regarding these delays.

• A Muslim woman who is a natural born US citizen asked CAIR-Chicago to help her husband obtain a Visa that would allow him to join her in the United States. CAIR-Chicago will connect her to an immigration attorney that can assist her.

• A Muslim woman believes that her daughter was racially profiled and wrongfully arrested. CAIR-Chicago will investigate the matter and take whatever action it deems necessary.

• The wife of a Muslim man contacted CAIR-Chicago because her husband was sent to jail and sentenced to deportation after registering with an immigration office in accordance with new federal laws that require non-citizens to do so. The couple hired an attorney and appealed the judge's decision, however, they were not informed of their appeal date. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the matter and will take whatever action necessary to help resolve the situation.

• A Muslim high school student was taken into police custody for eight hours without food or drink after an altercation with a student who called him a terrorist. CAIR-Chicago is assisting the student and will take whatever action is necessary to address the issue of the harassment he was facing at school and his treatment by police.

Employment

• A Muslim school teacher applied for time off to perform a religious pilgrimage (Hajj) but was denied. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the matter and will take whatever action deemed necessary to obtain accommodation for the teacher’s religious beliefs.

• A Muslim man was denied time off to go on Hajj even though the break was requested a year in advance. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the matter and will take whatever action deemed necessary to obtain accommodation for the man.

School

• A Muslim father contacted CAIR-Chicago about offensive material his daughter had to read for a high school class. The passage contained highly offensive language about the Prophet Muhammad. CAIR-Chicago is reviewing the material and will take whatever action is deemed appropriate to address the issue.

General

• A Muslim woman sought advice from CAIR-Chicago after reading an article written by a member of the Department of Justice that stated "Muslims have no chance of winning in Federal courts." The woman is currently involved in a federal case with her employer. CAIR-Chicago is reviewing the matter and will advise the woman of her options.

• A Muslim man reported to CAIR-Chicago that a radio talk show host gave false information on the air about him. The host claimed that the Muslim man murdered someone at his store. She also called it a conspiracy of foreigners. CAIR-Chicago is investigating the complaint and will take whatever action is deemed appropriate.
